Malawi Project Update

With the success of the Galway Bay and Rotary Club of South Anne Arundel County Golf Tournaments in September of 2012 and 2013 we raised over $25,000 toward our “Clean Water for Malawi Project”. We would like to thank everyone for their support and sponsorship and particularly for all those that volunteered to make each of these tournaments a huge success.

With these funds in hand we had diligently prepared to apply for a Rotary International Global Grant. With the potential for matching funds and additional sponsorships we intended to complete a $70,000 project. The project would install 25 wells at 15 locations within a 30 mile radius of the village of Nkhemenya, Malawi. It would incorporate a sanitation training program by certified college students from the region with each of the target communities and install several latrines where they would be most in need. However this would not turn out this way, just yet…..

Over the last year we had been diligently preparing and completing our online grant application however within the last few weeks we learned the news that our partner club in Malawi was unable to qualify due to non compliance of two of the necessary requirements. This was a devastating blow to our plans and basically meant that receiving funding as part of a Rotary Global Grant would not happen, at least any time soon.

We were not deterred by this set back and have revised our plans for what we have now termed as Phase 2 of our project. The new budget is $40,000 and the target is 15 Wells, sanitation education and a possible latrine. All of the arrangements had been ready to go in Malawi so we are pushing forward to deliver on our promise to the community.

We thank the Rotary Club of Annapolis for their commitment of $1,200, the Rotary Club of Leonardtown for theirs of $3,000 and most recently the Rotary Club of Severna Park for their monetary commitment of $500. All of these clubs are now listed as a official Rotary Club partners on this project.
